Radnor Township School District

Dear Parents and Guardians of 7th Grade Students:

It is our pleasure to welcome you again to Family and Consumer Sciences (FaCS). Students will have the opportunity to practice and improve skills needed to grow in independence and in their abilities to contribute toward family and social well-being. They will be encouraged to practice good management, and show responsibility for both individual and group projects.

This class will meet every day, same class period, for one quarter. Some homework will be assigned. The majority of student learning takes place in the classroom. Each student must supply their own 3-clasp folder with pockets and pens/pencils.

The 7th grade curriculum consists of five units. Time Management helps students evaluate their use of time. The students learn to be more efficient and make better choices with their time.

We review basic Sewing equipment, techniques, and safety procedures. Each student will complete a project made from a kit during class time. Projects are selected and paid for by the student. If financial difficulties occur, please inform the teacher.

Conflict Resolution helps students understand and learn to use active listening skills. Effectively using "I" messages are stressed, along with avoiding common barriers to effective resolution.

The Foods unit builds on skills learned in sixth grade. More effective time management skills are necessary because labs are more comprehensive. A variety of food preparation techniques and equipment is emphasized.

The need for a healthy lifestyle during adolescence is stressed during the Nutrition unit. Emphasis is placed on basic nutrients needed for growth and good health. Students will evaluate current eating habits and set goals for improvement.

We continue to enjoy watching your student grow and develop and using many of the skills learned in Family and Consumer Sciences.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Casey, Maureen McConnell, and Susan Scartozzi
